The Silent Merboy
The Silent Merboy is a Children’s book, currently under development, illustrated by talented Irish Artist, Niamh Moran. The story tells the tale of Oliver, a young Merboy, that possesses an extraordinary gift - an amplified sensitivity to sounds, which overwhelms him on his first day of school, with fear and anxiety in the presence of loud noises. After many loud encounters, Oliver flees from the noisy world and finds solace in the depths of the abyss. Oliver embarks on a transformational journey, of adapting and transformation, conquering his fears and navigating towards a fruitful first day at school.
Oliver was nervous on his first day of school, He wondered if the other kids would think he was cool. He sat on a stool, he felt so small, wondering if he would make any friends at all. Holding his ears he was filled with fear, "But mummy, the other kids are going to be loud.” He wouldn’t like the noise, in the depths of a crowd.
His mermaid mummy, gave him a hug and a kiss, she petted his little ears, hoping it would brush away his scary fears. “So, let's make a promise, just you and me, to make this first day at school as happy as can be.”
At the school, everyone was having such fun, but not little Oliver, he wanted to run, run until he saw no one. He wouldn’t talk to any of the kids, not the fish, turtles, or even the squids.
Oliver hurried his way to class, hoping that this day would soon come to pass. Suddenly a loud clank came from the bell, scared Oliver stiff, and scared him well. It made his heart jump, and his ears swell, as he made a dash, away from the bell.
Little Oliver swam for the surface above. There was no noise, which he loved, Just the sound of a calming breeze. His heart felt light, and filled with delight. While he lay on top of the big blue sea, where he found himself to be happy and free.
A boat blares a HONK, to say hello, Oliver yelps, and swims below.
Oliver dives into the depths below, Where the whales sing, and their voices grow. They sing so loud, and ever so strong, it wasn’t long, till Oliver covered his ears, and swam along.
Down in the depths of the seabed floor, Oliver sat, and found peace once more.
All alone, Oliver cried. He couldn't take the noise in his stride. “Why so sad, at the bottom of the ocean? It's such a pity, all this commotion." Oliver looked around, looking for the source, he looks down and spots a little seahorse. Swimming closer, with a little limp, speaking so softly, no more than a wimp.
"This place is so quiet, it gets me down, I haven't got a friend.” said little Seahorsey, with a frown.
Oliver comforts little Seahorsey, “We could just stay down here, at the bottom of the sea, just you and me, though there won’t be much, just seashells and sand.” As he looks around, for a better plan.
Oliver sits in the seabed sand, holding two seashells in his hands. He holds them up, covering his ears, and with a sudden gasp, he begins to cheer, the sounds don’t hurt his sensitive ears. “Come on little Seahorsey, I'll be your friend, and always will be, until the end.” Little Seahorsey looks with a glee, this is what he wanted, it felt like a dream.
Oliver swims from the seabed floor, carrying little Seahorsey, a friend he adored. To listen to the whales, a melody so pure, was nothing like he'd heard before. Their songs were majestic, and ever so sweet, Oliver’s little fins, tapped to their beat.
Oliver swam to the surface above, waving to the boat, returning the love.
Oliver and little Seahorsey swam back to the school. The other kids saw and thought they were cool. They welcomed them in with smiles all around, they laughed, swam, and danced in the playground.
Oliver returns home for his Mermaid Mummy to see, all of his new friends that have come to be, and joins them all for afternoon tea. He tells her tales of his adventures in the sea, and now she saw, that he was as happy as could be.
